Brussels Service Returns
Following the announcement from Eurostar that the Brussels service
is set to return on Monday 23 February, Ashford leaders were quick
to say what this means for the town in the current economic
climate.
Judith Armitt, Managing Director of Ashford’s Future, said: “We
have been working hard to make the case for a daily Ashford service
and we are delighted Eurostar has recognised the commercial value
of re-instating the service.
“Ashford is a fast-growing, vibrant location and, with so many
new homes and jobs coming to the town, good transport links are
vital to its success.
"This announcement along with the arrival of high-speed services
later this year will add significantly to the town’s attractiveness
as a business location and as a great place to live.”
Cllr Paul Clokie, Leader of Ashford Borough Council and Chairman
of the Ashford’s Future Partnership Board, added: “I am delighted
that Eurostar has listened to the concerns of rail users and
responded to what is clearly a strong demand.
“Having a direct service to Brussels will be a massive boost not
only to the development of Ashford but to the regeneration of Kent
and other parts of the South East.
“The announcement emphasises Ashford’s excellent connections and
will do much to strengthen our reputation as best placed in Britain
for new and international companies to set up business.”
This news follows on from the announcement last week that the
Government has approved plans for a new motorway junction on the
M20 and is another boost to Ashford’s economic prospects coming
soon after the opening of the town’s shared space scheme, which has
provided a more pleasant environment and made making moving around
the town centre much easier.
The addition of the 37 minute service to London later this year
will make Ashford one of the most accessible locations in the
UK.
