St Mary's works begins
A blessing from the Bishop of Dover and some special arts
performances provided a wonderful launch at an event to celebrate
the start of works on the Arts at St Mary’s project.
Work has begun to transform St Mary’s parish church in Ashford
town centre into a ‘shared sacred space’, with much improved public
facilities and a performance space which will cater for both
religious and arts events.
Special invited guests were treated to three different art
pieces: a dance routine by two local performers, commissioned
specifically for the church; a specially adapted piece by the
Ashford Choral Society conducted by Mark Deller, and a large scale
community art exhibition on display, “Drawing in the Community”,
developed by local artist Cathy Streeter.
The Arts at St Mary’s project means the church will become both
a place of worship and a vibrant arts venue with a diverse
programme of music, drama and arts events for up to 350 people.
The project will cost £1.7m, including £1.2m of Growth Area
Funding from Ashford’s Future, £100,000 from Ashford Borough
Council and further contributions from The Church of England and
other external partners.
