Savings On Tap

A water saving project in south Ashford aims to investigate ways of reducing water use in the home and may offer households the chance to save on their water bills.

The highly successful ‘Savings On Tap’ project on the Hillreed Homes development at Highland Park, Singleton, has focused on fitting water saving devices in new homes but this new pilot project now looks to offer similar benefits to existing homes.

In Kent 75% of the demand for public water supply is from consumption in the home.

It is estimated savings of up to 11,000 litres a year per household could be achieved through the fitting of a number of low cost water efficiency measures. These potential savings represent the size of a small swimming pool and are equivalent to 10% of domestic water use per household.

The project, organised by Kent County Council, South East Water, the Environment Agency, Ashford Borough Council and Ashford’s Future will focus on selected streets in the south Ashford area.

If it is a success it could also mean a reduction in household water bills and it is hoped that the findings can be rolled out to other areas of Kent and the wider South East in the future.
